Dr. John Daniel SmithI am a Veteran.

of Conway, AR

October 11, 1947 - March 26, 2024

With profound sorrow and broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Dr. John Daniel Smith. Dr. John departed this world peacefully on March 26, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones in Conway, Arkansas. Born October 11, 1947 in Camden, Arkansas, his life was a story of his dedication to God, his family and his patients. Called to medicine at the age of 10, he made it his mission to heal others with his God-given gift. For over fifty years, his dedication to medicine spanned his practice at the Banister-Lieblong Clinic, Chief of Staff for Conway Regional Medical Center and Team Physician for Conway High School (10 years) and University of Central Arkansas (27 years).

His life was anchored in his family. He shared a deep and abiding love with his wife, partner and soulmate, Carla Smith, from 1972 until his passing in 2024. Their marriage brought forth two remarkable children, Jacob Smith (Libby Smith) and Jessica Phaup (Doug Phaup). In his later years, he relished his role as Pops, showering love, attention and time with his five grandchildren, Stella Smith, Spencer Smith, Greer Smith, Oliver Phaup and Finley Phaup, who he deeply loved. He also cherished his relationship with his brother and best friend, David Smith (Shirley Smith), as well as his seven nieces and nephews.

He was passionate about the game of golf, had many putters and considered his trip to Scotland in 2011 with his brother, son, nephews and friends among one of the highlights of his life. He also prided himself on solving the daily crossword in record time (with his left hand). He always looked forward to watching a great movie or television series at home alongside his wife. Whether in the clinic, on the golf course, on the sidelines, or just hanging out, being the D.O.C, he never failed to leave those he encountered in better shape than he found them.

His legacy will continue to live in the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have known him. His compassion, brilliance and devotion to God, his family and his patients will be cherished forever. He will be remembered as an exceptional physician focused on the quality, not quantity, of his patients' care, routinely committed to going above and beyond whatever was necessary to treat his patients.

We would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Tim Freyaldenhoven for providing excellence in his recent attention, expertise and overall care he provided in the treatment of our dad/husband. Additionally, we would like to give thanks to Dr. Thad Hardin and Dr. Lander Smith for their unwavering support over the past weeks. Among the other special people in his life, the family would like to recognize Rene' Ford, the past and present doctors and staff of the Banister-Lieblong Clinic and the many patients' lives he touched over his entire career.

The family would like to extend an invitation to the public to attend a Celebration of Life service at Antioch Baptist Church on April 13, 2024 at 2:00p.m. to honor and celebrate his memory. Consistent with his wishes and in lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Antioch Baptist Outreach Ministry, a ministry that holds a special place in his heart.

Rest in peace, Dr. John. Your luminous spirit continues to inspire all who had the honor of knowing you. Your light shines on in the lives of those you touched, as a beacon of love, compassion and kindness. You will forever be remembered as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, healer, teacher, mentor and child of God. We love you!
