Vivian Charlene Gower

of Mountain View, AR

June 2, 1934 - September 27, 2014

Vivian Charlene Gower, 80, of Mountain View, Arkansas, died September 27, 2014, in Harrison, Arkansas. She was being cared for by the employees and staff of Orendoff nursing facilities of Harrison where she had been a resident for the past several years.
Vivian was born in Newnata, Arkansas, on June 2, 1934, to John B. and Lona Gower, both who preceded her in death. She was the eighth child born into this family.
Surviving Vivian are one sister-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Juanita) Gower and their daughter, Sandra Collins of Little Rock, Arkansas. She also leaves many cousins, most who are out-of-state residents.
Preceding her in death were her parents, all of her siblings and her cousin Kenneth Gower II. Sisters included Verlie Gower Foster, Imogene Gower McLaughlin, and a half-sister, Ruby Gower. Brothers were Buel, Terral, Kenneth, and Carl Gower.
According to a note written on the back of a voided check from the Bank of Mountain View, Vivian was saved on Friday morning, December 26, 1947 at the age of 13 in the front bedroom of her home with her mother and her sister Imogene as witnesses. She attended several area churches.
Vivian was a unique individual who walked miles during her lifetime and was known by the fact that she never let the lack of transportation stop her from going to church, to the post office, or from taking care of her business obligations.
Vivian had an avid interest in the history of this area with especial pride in her father a former sheriff of Stone County and mayor of Mountain View. She was a long-time member and a contributor of stories to the Stone County Historical Society. She enjoyed attending the meetings of the Historical Society, volunteering at the Museum, and maintaining the grounds of the Mountain View Historical Cemetery.
Vivian was a published poet. Her numerous poems were written on scraps of paper and stuck in books, drawers, in vases, and other obscure places. Many of these works are preserved at the Stone County Museum. Within her papers is a certificate from the World of Poetry congratulating her as a ''Golden Poet for 1990.'' In addition to this award, Vivian was accompanied by Sherrie Beck to Washington, D.C. where she once again was recognized for her poetry.
Services were held at Roller-Crouch Chapel with Bob Gower and Joel Breeding officiating. Pallbearers included Mark Branscum, Danny Simmons, Fred Ward, David Brown, Gerald Ivy, and Joel Breeding.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stone County Historical Society, P.O. Box 210, Mountain View, AR 72560

My father was Terral, Vivian's brother. I never knew her or met her and just saw this. I wasn't aware that she had passed. I would have enjoyed meeting her and getting to know her. I, too, have a passion for poetry. Rest in peace, Aunt Vivian.
